WP Store Locator or My Store Locator?

WP Store Locator is one of the most popular store locator plugins for WordPress, and the core version is free. My Store Locator runs as a hosted service outside WordPress and works on any website. Which one fits mostly depends on who looks after the map.

What WP Store Locator does well

WP Store Locator has been in the WordPress directory for years. According to wordpress.org it has more than 40,000 active installations and a rating of 4.8 out of 5. Its main strengths:

  • Free core plugin with unlimited locations, a shortcode and editor blocks.
  • Several map providers: OpenStreetMap without an API key, or Google Maps, Mapbox or Stadia Maps with your own key.
  • Opening hours, categories, custom fields and custom markers in the free version.
  • Consent built in: a GDPR consent placeholder plus integrations with Borlabs Cookie and Complianz.
  • Data stays in your WordPress. Locations are stored in your own installation.
  • Extras paid once: CSV import, a search widget and statistics come in the add-on bundle for a one-time USD 49 (1 site), 99 (5) or 199 (20), with lifetime updates and 12 months of support.

If you run a single WordPress site, maintain it yourself and want to keep your locations there, WP Store Locator is a very good choice.

Where the differences are

Plugin or service. A plugin becomes part of your WordPress installation. That has upsides: no monthly fee, the data stays with you. It also means you install updates, sort out conflicts with your theme and other plugins and keep an eye on page speed. My Store Locator runs outside WordPress. You paste one embed code and we take care of the rest.

Several websites and teams. If your locations appear on more than one site, say the main site, a landing page and a shop, a plugin has to be maintained in each installation. With us you maintain locations once and show them in several maps. On the Business plan, store managers get their own login with access to their locations only, without access to the WordPress backend.

Privacy. Both work without Google Maps. With WP Store Locator the data sits in your WordPress and map tiles come from the provider you choose. With us, data and map server are in Germany and a data processing agreement (GDPR Art. 28) is available in the app. Statistics work without cookies and without storing IP addresses. More under GDPR & security.

Cost over time. WP Store Locator with add-ons costs USD 49 once for one site. That is cheap. Factor in your own time for upkeep and updates, though. For a small number of locations our Free plan costs nothing either, with no expiry date.

Who should choose what?

WP Store Locator is the better fit if

  • you have one WordPress site and look after it yourself,
  • you have many locations and want no recurring cost,
  • the data must live in your own WordPress database.

My Store Locator is the better fit if

  • you don't want to maintain another plugin, or don't use WordPress at all,
  • locations should appear on several websites,
  • several people with different permissions maintain locations,
  • you want statistics, enquiries through the map and several layouts in one place.

FAQ

Can I move my locations from WP Store Locator?

Yes. Export your locations as CSV (with the CSV add-on or an export plugin) and import the file. You map the columns during import. If you'd rather not do it yourself, our free switching service helps.

Is there a My Store Locator plugin for WordPress?

Our own plugin is in preparation. Until then you embed the map with the "Custom HTML" block. It takes a few minutes, see the WordPress guide.

Will the map slow down my WordPress site?

The map loads in its own frame from our server. Nothing is added to your WordPress database or backend. With click-to-load, the map only loads when a visitor opens it.

What does My Store Locator cost?

The Free plan is free with no expiry date. Starter costs $20 and Pro $50 per month, excl. VAT; paying yearly saves 20 %. Details under Pricing.
